KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The increasingly significant role of Islamic finance will not only increase its potential to contribute to global financial stability but also towards strengthening global growth, Bank Negara Malaysia Governor, Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz said Tuesday.

"In the search for the appropriate reforms, there is a general consensus that we need to return banking to its basic functions - to provide financial services that add value to the real economy.

"This in fact represents the very essence of Islamic finance," she said in her keynote address at the Seminar on Islamic Finance: During and After the Global Financial Crisis, in Istanbul, Turkey. The speech was released here Tuesday.

History has shown that there have been more than 100 distinct banking crises in this recent three decades, and inherent in Islamic finance is the explicit elements that address several of the issues that have surfaced in the conventional financial system during the current crisis, she said.
